The crab's
thought ( April 2000) What the crab thinks in his hole-garden. |
I don't want to exactly translate what I've written in
Italian language, because it concerns some particular happenings and expressions
not very interesting to English speaking people. I want to report about an
adventure I beginned one month ago and I had decided to begin for very long
time. I visited several sites, I searched a lot of information and, at the
end, I decided to install Linux on a new partition of my hard disk. The first
result of this operation was that I had to reinstall my previous operating
system (Windows). The second was that I had to reinstall also Linux, more
than one time. Now I can start my machine and select to restart either Linux
or Windows, thanks to Lilo (Linux Loader) that is able to start more than
one system. Linux is an operating system very different from Windows. It is more similar to DOS. It can run also with a software graphic interface, like Windows: you can activate a Gnome with Enlightenment Window Manager or similar software such as KDE, After Step, etc.. But the strenght of Linux is in its capability to manage a local network with high security and speed, and to handle the Internet navigation. Some people say it is better than Windows NT, in this kind of operation. But we can't speak about Linux as one only product. There are several distributions issued by many companies: Red Hat, Mandrake, Debian, Suse, Slackware, Corel. My Linux is a Red Hat 6.1 distribution. I spent all the last month to configure my lan and, at the moment, I can't enter Internet: I still use Windows as gateway. This is a temporary situation. In the next future I'll try an opposite lan architecture: Linux will be the Gateway to enter Internet. Linux is a free software that I like very much because of its basic philosophy that you can see in the GNU Manifest, written by Richard Stallman at the beginning of 90 years.
